Went out with my roomie to buy star fruit lanterns for the mid-autumn festival this afternoon and our journey brought us to another one of my favourite Cha Chaan Tangs in Wan Chai, Kam Fung Cafe on Spring Garden Road.
Kam Fung serves the best “dong lai chas’ (Hong Kong style iced milk tea) and chicken pies in town. Their iced lai chas, unlike those of most other cha chaan tangs, are not made from their hot alternative added with ice and that is what gives it its consistent, smooth, dense texture. Those who are not a fan of the Hong Kong style milk teas will find this a bit too strong for their taste but others applaud at its consistency. The success to their chicken pies, on the other hand, lies with the semi-sweet and well-baked short crust pastry. And if his taste is anything to go by, when I was about to leave I overheard a Taiwanese man saying, ‘Thank you, this pie really is very yummy!”
